Concealed Campus Carry Forums, Survey
On June 1, 2015, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 11, which has been called “campus carry,” into law. Starting Aug. 1, 2017, the law will allow licensed holders to carry a concealed handgun on community college campuses, including 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ.
The law also allows colleges to create an implementation policy with reasonable rules and regulations. Dr. Jeremy McMillen, 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ President and the GC Campus Carry Task Force have developed several opportunities for students, faculty, staff and community members to provide input into 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ’s plan.
91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ has developed a survey that is accessible to anyone who would like to participate. The survey will be available from Sept. 19 until Oct. 7 and can be accessed here .
Additionally, the GC Campus Carry Task Force will host forums to provide an opportunity to discuss the issue. The purpose of the forums is not to debate the law, but to help the college implement the law. Forums will last approximately one hour and are scheduled as follows:
- South Campus – Sept. 27, 11:30 a.m., TBD
- Student Housing – Sept. 27, 6:30 p.m., Viking Hall
- Student Organizations/All Students – Sept. 28, 1:15 p.m., Life Center, Viking Room
- Open Forum – Sept. 30, 10 a.m., Irma Blackburn Auditorium
- Open Forum – Sept. 30, 2 p.m., Irma Blackburn Auditorium
The college also has a web page with frequently asked questions that provides links to the full text of the law as well as a few more resources. As the GC Campus Carry Task Force makes recommendations, information will be updated on the website.
